President's Message - February 2003

At an automated teller machine, a man puts in his card and asks to withdraw $40. When the money comes out, he finds he has been given $60, an extra $20.

Two friends, each an owner of a small business, discuss a new computer software program. One says that he can’t afford the cost of the software and has to do all his work with paper and pencil. He asks his friend if she would consider copying the software because it would make his work much easier.

The cases above are taken from the Canadian Coalition Against Insurance Fraud Web site for which I thank. Each of the situations poses the question, “What would you do?” It makes you think – but these are what we face in the industry every day. How would you handle these situations?

I’m sure that some of you have come across a questionable claim where you have doubts and reservations about the legitimacy of the claim. We hope that this month’s magazine, and as well as the Trade Show; will assist you in better educating yourself to make that rash and reasonable judgement.

I began this column as I did because this is a theme issue. We are trying this in the hopes that future editions will be the same. This month’s theme is “Fraud”, and this will also tie into the seminars that will be held at our 2003 Trade Show.

Our Trade Show is Canada’s largest event specifically geared to the Claims Industry. This year marks the 11th anniversary of the event, but this year marks a departure and involves a hands-on approach. I would like specifically to thank Louise Rivett, Past President, and Spencer Bailey, Second Vice-President, for their hours of hard work. I would also like to thank Jackie Johnson-Schnurr, our business manager, for taking on additional duties. Of course, I would like to thank Dorothy Lowry, Georgian Bay Delegate, for her leadership as Chair of this event.

In my travels across the province this month I will be attending the Hamilton Chapter’s Annual Ski Day. During my travels across the province it is nice to see everyone who makes up this dynamic association. Again, everyone keep up the good work.

March is the time for many to take a break, and if you are not leaving the province and would like to try something new, then can I suggest something: curling. We are having our Second Annual Curling Bonspeil on Thursday, March 6, 2003. It will occur at the Brampton Curling Club. Please see the announcement on page 39 for details.

Election time is coming up. This is one way you can get involved in your association. In the Toronto area, April is the new month for elections, and we have two positions that will be open. Please consider spending one day a month to give back to your industry. In the chapters, please consider your involvement. The success of the association depends on your support.

Respectfully,
Brian Nauss, CIP, CRM, CFEI
