President's Message - November 2002

November, 2002
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

“It is not death that a man should fear, but he should fear never beginning to live.”-Marcus Aurelius

November is recognized as a month of remembrance, and it is with great sorrow that we announce the death of John Harris. He was President of the OIAA during 1973. He was a principal of Harris Harding and Bickers. At this time of year it is important that we remember those who have fought so bravely for us during the many conflicts around the world. This sacrifice has given us the freedom that we enjoy today. Please join me in paying your respects on November 11 with a moment of silence.

We need to develop the future of our industry. Although there have been ups and downs in recent years, this is still a rewarding industry in which to be employed. What we need is new blood to move the industry forward. Although everyone is still busy in both their personal and business lives, our association offers a great place to meet and learn with your peers. We also encourage you to inspire someone to join this association. If you are reading this “President’s Message,” please bring a peer who works with you, but who is not a member, to our next meeting, and let them see first-hand what it is like to experience the OIAA. We know that once they attend, they will see the benefits of this association.

As part of my duties as President, I must tour the province and visit each chapter. This past month I had the pleasure of visiting Ottawa. I would like to thank Alan Gallagher and the OVAA executive for their hospitality.

As the month of November rolls in, it provides us with our first luncheon meeting of the year. This meeting, on November 13, 2002, will be held at the Downtown Board of Trade. Our presenter will be Leslie MacLeod of Leslie H. MacLeod & Associates. The workshop-style seminar will deal with the Best Practices of Negotiation and Mediation.

I would be remiss not to mention that our annual Christmas Dinner will be held on Wednesday, December 11, 2002. This year’s event will be held at the Sheraton Centre in downtown Toronto. Please see our advertisement in this month’s WP.

Our annual Trade Show at the Toronto Metro Convention Centre will be held on Wednesday, February 5, 2003. We will be showcasing a host of exhibitors and a great selection of seminars. Please see our advertisement in this month’s WP.

Discussions have been held with he CICMA (Canadian Insurance Claims Manger’s Association and the CIAA (Canadian Independent Adjusters Association) regarding the issue of changing the Independent Adjuster License. These discussions have centered around the merits and/or need to change the Automobile License into two parts – Automobile Physical Damage License and Automobile Injury License. There have been no details or investigation as to what will be required to obtain either License except that it will still be necessary to have 8 required Insurance Institute Courses and sit for the Oral Examination. We require your feedback regarding this industry change. Please see Page 34 and provide us with your comments
