Anatomy of a Large, Complex, Hospital Oil Spill By Dan McNicoll and Mark McCalla, Senior Forensic Geoscientists, exp Services Inc. Ottawa In January 2009, a large furnace oil spill occurred beneath a brand new, $50 million, stateof-the-art, operating hospital building in Ottawa. What followed was an extensive emergency response program, a comprehensive subsurface investigation, a detailed remedial options analysis, the operation of a pilot scale and permanent remediation system, the implementation of a comprehensive indoor air quality monitoring program and the establishment of working groups to track and address employee’s concerns - all cumulating in a comprehensive investigation and subsequent validation by the Ontario Ministry of Labour. What follows is a summary of these events.
